Daily Mail Report from November 2004
Prince Harry has been secretly dating the daughter of an African rancher for the past eight months, telling friends she is his 'first true love'.
Nineteen-year-old Chelsy Davy appears equally smitten. She and the Prince were seen kissing and cuddling in nightclubs when he made two secret trips to her Cape Town home.
Harry even invited her to share his guest house during his recent controversial visit to the El Remanso polo farm in Argentina.
She arrived in mid November and last weekend the pair flew out on a hunting expedition to a private game lodge.
According to sources at El Remanso, the couple could barely take their eyes off each other. "Harry and Chelsy were like any young couple in love, kissing and holding hands, and he seemed quite besotted," said one.
"They looked madly in love and at one point Harry admitted she was his first true love. They did all the normal things young people do.
"We held a small barbecue and they sat beside each other and were laughing and joking. She seemed very relaxed in his company."
Harry was, however, 'paranoid' about news of the romance leaking out and insisted Chelsy stay behind when he left the estate.
"When they were on the hunting trip, where they were mostly shooting pigeons, someone got out a small compact camera. Harry seemed quite agitated about having their picture taken together," the source said.
"It is obvious he is besotted with her. She is a very attractive girl but also quite a sweet person. When someone asked how long they had been going out, she blushed and said 'Eight months'.
"She was definitely a calming influence of him. We had some beer at the barbecue but he had only one beer and half a glass of wine."
Chelsy flew back to Cape Town at the weekend. She declined to comment on the relationship. A student at Cape Town University, she shares a house in the suburb of Newlands with her brother Shaun, 20.
Although Harry has known her since they were at school - she was educated at Cheltenham Ladies College - their romance did not begin until April when he stopped off to visit friends in South Africa during his trip to work with Aids orphans in Lesotho.
Within four days he was telling fellow travellers that he was madly in love.
He has visited his girlfriend twice in Cape Town, in April and August. Chelsy drove him around in her Mercedes sports car and took him to Rhodes House nightclub where they drank champagne.
The student's parents, Charles and Bev, were unavailable for comment yesterday.
